Assisted dying bill rejected in England and Wales

MPs voted 286 to 270 against the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill on September 8, 2026, ending the latest attempt to legalise assisted dying in England and Wales. The bill would have permitted terminally ill adults with fewer than six months to live to apply for assisted dying, provided safeguards such as approval from two doctors and an expert panel were met.

The bill, tabled by Labour MP Lauren Edwards, will not advance further in this parliamentary session. While future attempts to legalise assisted dying could still emerge, this vote marks the failure of the current proposal.

A similar measure passed the House of Commons in June 2025 with a 23-vote majority but was later stalled in the House of Lords after receiving over 1,200 amendments.
