Llangollen Canal Closed Again After Leak Near Collapse Site

A section of the Llangollen Canal near the site of a major collapse on December 22, 2025, has been temporarily closed following a new leak. The incident occurred along the stretch affected by the earlier structural failure, which released millions of litres of water onto nearby land in the early hours of that date.

Last week, a festival at the Whitchurch Arm site took place to encourage canal usage, despite the ongoing recovery efforts following the collapse. The event highlighted the canal’s role in local recreation and tourism, even as repairs continued.

Workers have since rebuilt the collapsed embankment at Whitchurch Arm using layered construction with reinforced structural integrity. The repairs, expected to be completed by February, are part of a £10 million investment by the Canal & River Trust (CRT) to restore stability to the affected area.
