Liberal Democrat MP Layla Moran has urged the construction of a £120 million maternity unit at Oxford’s John Radcliffe Hospital to address growing pressures on the existing facility.
The current maternity unit, designed to handle 5,000 births annually, now manages around 7,000 deliveries each year, exceeding its original capacity.
Moran highlighted deficiencies in the existing unit, including birthing rooms without toilets and a lack of soundproofed spaces for bereaved parents.
Oxfordshire relies solely on the John Radcliffe Hospital for obstetric care, despite ongoing calls from Banbury for the reinstatement of local maternity services.
