Cornwall hotel site left in limbo after plans collapse

Plans to redevelop Newquay’s iconic Hotel Bristol into 143 apartments have been abandoned by developer Salboy, leaving the site’s future unclear. The company cited unfavourable market conditions as the reason for scrapping the scheme, which had already been scaled back from earlier proposals for a larger mixed-use development.

Salboy confirmed it would now seek planning permission to demolish the existing hotel, but declined to comment on whether the site would be sold or repurposed. The announcement follows years of controversy, with local opposition to the original 2022 proposal—criticised as a ‘monstrosity’—and subsequent revised plans that also faced backlash. Cornwall Council had approved the latest, reduced scheme in 2025, but no alternative development has been proposed.
